What is it with the Hard Right and Bathrooms?

Lets start with what does not trouble me at all.

1. Two consenting adults getting it on.
2. Two consenting adults of the same sex getting it on.
3. Any number of consenting adults getting it on.

Consenting adults getting it on in a public toilet? Well, it troubles me, but I don’t really have a humongous problem with it.

I can barely tolerate using a public toilet for its intended purpose without vomiting. But… if two guys want to use it for other purposes, as long as they clean up after themselves, who am I to judge?

Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho), a three-term senator, “pleaded guilty earlier this month to misdemeanor disorderly conduct charges stemming from his June arrest by an undercover police officer in a men’s restroom at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.”

Sound familiar? OFF/beat readers probably remember Florida State Rep. and Idiot of the Year nominee Bob Allen (link not in original), who blamed his alleged bathroom solicitation of an undercover male cop on a fear of black people. Craig, 62, was merely accused of playing footsie under the stall door and “brush[ing] his hand beneath the partition between them.” Craig contends that it’s all a big misunderstanding, explaining to police that “he has a wide stance when going to the bathroom.” (source)

What does bother me is when you have “Family Values” politicians who make a career out of trying to push their own morality on the rest of us, and then we find out that they are not only practicing something very different from what they preach, but they are taking it to a level that just makes you go “whaaaaa?” (See “Greatest Excuse Ever“) Now hold on to your Michelle Malkin mask for a second… because I’m going to answer the “what about Bill Clinton?” question.

If a politician spends his career, or frankly any political capital on trying to intrude on what happens in other peoples’ sex lives, then yes, I care what they do with their own. Bill Clinton may have used a cigar as a dildo, and that does make him a kinky naughty boy, but it doesn’t make him a hypocrite.

On the other hand, David Vitter (R-LA) pushes for abstinence only education (source) while frequenting prostitutes himself. I personally would not condemn a politician who visited a prostitute. I will condemn a hypocrite.
