Finally, after years of injustice, Genarlow Wilson is a free man. Wilson, an honor student and football standout was 17 years old when he had consensual oral sex with a 15 year old girl. For that, a low-life Georgia prosecutor decided that Mr. Wilson belonged in prison, and succeeded in getting Mr. Wilson a 10 year sentence.
After a judge overturned his conviction, the Georgia Attorney General appealed, lost, and finally Wilson is a free man. (source)
I don’t want to hear one peep from anyone who wants to say that the prosecutor was “only doing his job.” So were the guards at Auschwitz. Part of a prosecutor’s job is to use their discretion – and in this case, the prosecutor used his discretion in a manner for which, if I believed in hell, I’d say he should burn there for all eternity.
“For the law to punish Wilson as it would an adult, with the extraordinarily harsh punishment of ten years in prison without the possibility of probation or parole, appears to be grossly disproportionate to his crime,” wrote Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears. Full opinion here.
